Chapter 22
Mia and I lie beside the pool that afternoon, letting the sun work its magic on our pale skin. Mia still looks a little green around the gills, but she’d decided the worst of the food poisoning was behind her.
I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but I need to tell her about Issac before I burst, so I’m willing to risk it.
“I didn’t even eat the entire hot. . .” Mia moans and shoves a hand over her mouth. “I can’t even say it, but I didn’t even eat the whole thing. I don’t know how it made me so sick.”
“That’s rough.”
The word hot dog is making Mia ill, but it’s making my stomach growl with eager anticipation. Issac ordered a chicken Caesar salad for lunch, so I had the same. It was tasty, but only a couple of hours after my last bite, I feel like I’m running on fumes.
I eye Mia’s pale skin and pinched expression, releasing a guilty sigh. She’s obviously feeling miserable. The right thing to do is let her go home and recuperate. I can wait a few more hours before sharing my excitement.
“We don’t have to do this today,” I force myself to say. “Maybe you should go back to bed.”
“No.” Mia lets out a small moan with her eyes squished shut. “I have to tell you about Keith.”
In my excitement about Issac, I totally forgot about Mia’s college cutie.
“So is that who you ate hot dogs with?” I wiggle my brows, but sober when Mia’s hand slaps over her lips at the mention of the deadly food. “Sorry.” I scrunch up my face.
Mia’s in misery. It looks like she’s doing all she can to keep the barf-fest she told me she went through last night from starting back up again.
Although I want to start talking about Issac—and Chrissy, and the dance class—I pinch my lips tight and focus on the ripples of light moving around on the bottom of the pool as a slight breeze moves the water as I give her a chance to recuperate.
It’s hard to believe that not a week ago, Caden and I sat right there in that spot, legs touching, innocence and friendship fully intact. I feel as if I’ve aged years in the few short days since that night. In a way, I have. My life’s gone through such drastic changes I hardly feel like the same young girl, bubbling with excitement to share my first kiss with my best friend.
A snort rumples from my nose at the thought of Caden being my best friend. He couldn’t dump me fast enough. I wonder if it was something he’d been planning anyway. Having a heavyset friend like me couldn’t have been helping with his quest for popularity.
Thinking of Caden makes me wonder how he managed to get a girlfriend his first day of vacay. He’s normally so shy, it’s hard to see him making the move on some random girl.
“What are you thinking?” Mia asks, squinting at me through one eye.
